Subject: Marching Band 2011-2012

Greetings and welcome to and back for another exciting year in the Southeast Raleigh Marching Bulldog Band Family.  I hope and trust that you are enjoying your summer and that you are looking forward to a spirited and fun filled 2011-2012 Band Season.   Our theme this year is “Lottery Ticket”.  It’s all about what would happen if you won the lottery.  We start in the work place with a piece called “Novus”.  After winning the Lottery our Character goes to Las Vegas with the Santana Piece-“Smooth”.  Well Vegas isn’t very friendly and we go to the song “Bad Day”.   The show closes with the 70’s piece-“All I Have to Do Is Dream”, with the showing ending with our character being the same person he started off as, and with the same money that he started off with.  As you can see it’s an exciting show.  With our influx of 30 new members we are looking forward to this being a strong rebuilding year after the three year graduation of 90 plus seniors.   Our motto this year is “Begin With The End In Mind!!!!”.

First things first, Band Camp.  Band Camp will take place in July, the week of the 18th-22rd.  This is a very important time for us to learn large portions of our show, music, bonding and training skills.  Band Camp is mandatory; please plan accordingly so that you will be in attendance.  Non-attendance is not an option.  We are dedicating ourselves to being a prolific unit so this year we all have to roll up our sleeves and “Begin With The End In Mind!!!!”   If conflicts do arise, please contact me and let us work out a win-win situation for all of us.  Very important-Students must have a health form (available online at bulldogband.net) and permission form on file on the first day of camp, no exceptions.  This is very, very important, so please plan to have this form turned in by July 18.  Students without a permission form on file will not be able to participate in Band Camp.  This is a legal issue, please comply.

Rookie and Leadership Camps will take place on Thursday July 14-8:00am-12:00noon New Members, Colorguard and Percussion
Friday July 15-8:00am-12:00noon
On Friday July 15, there will be a leadership training session for all section leaders in the Southeast Raleigh Band Room from 12:30-2:30.  Mrs. Amy Carroll will conduct this very important training session.  Adult leaders are allowed to come as well.

Camp Helpful Hints to Get You Ready

  1. Exercise, get out and walk to get used to being outside. 70% of band camp takes place outside, so please condition your body for this event.
  2. Hydrate, drink plenty of water and drink non-carbonated drinks.
  3. Eat breakfast each day and allow time for night and morning rest.  Working a summer job and then coming to band camp is a strain on your body.
  4. Include the following-sun block(for your skin condition), hat to block the sun, clothes that cover the shoulders and midriff.  No short shorts please, conservative length.  Closed toed shoes, no flip flops or sandals.  A good pair of practice sneakers is very important.  A lot of our work is athletic related, so attire suitable for working out should be considered.
  5. Make sure that your instrument is in good working condition.  If you are playing a school instrument you will need to sign a school contract and take responsibility for the care of this instrument.  If you are in need of a school instrument please contact Mr. Scott to ensure that we have the proper instruments available.
  6. We are in need of a few instrument switches, particularly French Horn, Tenor Saxophone and Tuba.  Contact Mr. Scott if you are interested in assisting with balancing out our instrumentation.
  7. Please check our website (bulldogband.net) for updates and sign up for fund raising opportunities.

We can use your help in painting and preparing props for this year’s show.  Further information will come out concerning prop building and painting days.  Please help - this opportunity is open to adults and students.  We also need your support for donations to band camp, contact Linda Brown-Lanclos.

Fair Share-Fair Share is the process by which we provide support for the band.  Students may pay their fair share in the following manner, cash, check, money order, online using PayPal, or work the various fund raising opportunities that the band provides.
